The Historic Districts Council (HDC) was founded in 1970 on the premise that the people behind the preservation of New York City’s historic neighborhoods need representation and a communal voice. HDC has been pursuing that mission ever since and, as part of raising our community higher, every year since 1990, we have honored one or more special New Yorkers with the Landmarks Lion Award to recognize their aggressive protection of our city’s historic buildings and neighborhoods. In this extraordinary year, in recognition of both HDC’s 50th anniversary and the ongoing public circumstances, we will be hosting a Landmarks Lion event unlike any other. We’re taking the party online to directly bring you a celebration of HDC’s fifty-year history of serving, supporting, entertaining and uplifting the people who fight to save New York’s past. Please join us virtually in celebrating our past and ensuring our future as a member of the 2020 Landmarks Lion Benefit Committee.
For fifty years, the Historic Districts Council has been helping people to preserve historic neighborhoods and buildings throughout the five boroughs. HDC has been involved in the creation of almost all of New York City’s 150 officially designated historic districts. We’ve organized neighbors, sponsored studies, testified at hearings, worked with city agencies, and held people’s hands through the landmarking process. Each year, we offer over two dozen public programs, conferences, tours and talks about New York’s neighborhoods, history and preservation. Our “Six to Celebrate” program is the only citywide initiative that spotlights preservation concerns put forth directly by local communities. More than that, HDC works constantly to broaden and strengthen the community of New Yorkers who care enough about our city to get involved with its future. It’s a tough mission but it shouldn’t be a lonely one.
Our work would be impossible without people like you. Please join the Benefit Committee and help HDC celebrate our big birthday. The Landmarks Lion is our major annual fundraiser and joining the committee will ensure that HDC is able to continue working with neighborhood advocates and protecting New York’s historic places. Although we can’t be together in person this year, we are still all working together for New York. Please join us on November 10th to celebrate all we’ve accomplished so far.
