The Midtown South Mixed Use Plan (MSMX) has the potential to bring thousands of units of new housing to the neighborhood. But how will it impact the existing historic fabric of the area including the Garment Center National Register Historic District and the locally designed districts of Ladies’ Mile and Madison Square North?
The Department of City Planning is pressing forward with the plan but thus far has made no changes based on feedback from community organizations and two community boards. There remains a real risk to the neighborhood including much wider demolition rather than adaptive reuse, as well as the loss of remaining manufacturing jobs and the minimization of existing air rights owned by landmarks across the district.
