1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Located in the heart of the Northwest Bronx, Kingsbridge has a rich diversity of people and of buildings: of ethnicities, cultures, and faiths, and of architectural styles, scales, and uses. This tour will highlight the connections between the neighborhood’s built environment and its strong history of community organizing, which has often involved fighting for community control and benefits in preservation and equitable development. We will see and discuss a wide variety of sites of architectural, cultural, and social significance, from 19th century farmhouses, to institutional buildings from the first half of the 20th century, to commercial corridors and apartment buildings threatened by displacement. These include the massive and now vacant 1917 Kingsbridge Armory, the 1812 Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, and several examples of Art Deco apartment buildings. The tour will be led by Adolfo Abreu of the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition (NWBCCC) and Nick Shatan of the Bronx Cooperative Development Initiative (BCDI).
