Discover the Wonders of Parkchester – April 23

Saturday, April 23, 2022

12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

In person tour

Sharon Pandolfo of The Parkchester Project will lead an in-person walking tour through the beautiful Parkchester area of the Bronx. You will get a close-up look at the extraordinary collection of terra cotta art that adorns the buildings by artists Carl Schmitz, Raymond Grandville Barger, Edmond Amateis, and Joseph Kiselewski. Located on 129 acres, Parkchester also features work by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, architects for the Empire State Building, landscape architects Clark and Rapuano, and the Federal Seaboard Terracotta Corporation.

The tour will include a visit to the complex’s Virginia Park, where Sharon will discuss how this 1939 development presaged the rise of the middle class in America.

The Parkchester Project is a 2022 HDC Six to Celebrate. Over the course of the year, the Historic Districts Council will work with them to save the historic character of Parkchester and advocate for its landmark designation.

*After registration, you will receive information about the tour’s meeting location.

*All tours are rain or shine.
