Advocacy for the Transfiguration Church

HDC strongly supports the Individual Designation of the Transfiguration Church, built in 1962, at 64-25 Perry Avenue, Maspeth Queens. HDC has been working with not only DOCOMOMO US New York/Tri-State but also with prominent Lithuanian and Lithuanian-American organizations and individuals to advocate for the site.

The Church is a testament to three key Lithuanian architects and artists, Jonas Mulokas, V.K. Joyanas and Aleksandras Marciulnois. Each of them became recognized nationally for their unique interpretation of Lithuanian culture and aesthetics.Transfiguration Church is a unique blend of traditional Lithuanian motifs and modern design that was considered one of the five best new buildings of New York City in the year it was built.

HDC began advocacy work on the Transfiguration Church in March 2025 when the Diocese of Brooklyn proposed to close the church and merge it with a neighboring congregation. HDC, alongside DOCOMOMO US, The Lithuanian Alliance of America, Queens council Member Robert Holden, The Lithuanian Consulate in New York, Knights of Lithuanian Council, as well as parishioners and members of the community, have been advocating for the churches designation as a New York City landmark as well as exploring alternate uses if the site is sold.

Most recently, LPC has issued in their determination letter the church “May Merit” designation. In September, the President and First Lady of Lithuania paid a visit to the church to show their support for the building’s preservation and protection. Currently, the Diocese of Brooklyn has promised to keep the church open on a limited basis.

HDC will continue to lead the coalition in our efforts to seek official recognition for the Transfiguration Church due to its overwhelming importance historically and architecturally.
