On July 19th, HDC and the Bushwick Historic Preservation Association (BPHA) hosted a press conference in conjunction with Council Members Sandy Nurse and Jennifer Gutierrez to demand action and equity from the LPC. At the Press Conference we made a two-fold call to LPC:
- LPC must ensure Bushwick’s landmarks receive the care they deserve, and the protection they’re legally entitled to.
- LPC must make good on the LPC 2021 Equity Framework by acknowledging the community’s preservation priorities, and contextually assessing the neighborhood’s historic resources through a lens that acknowledges the decades of municipal disinvestment and discrimination against communities of color that forced Bushwick to lose so much of its historic fabric.
