LPC-26-08000

17 Montgomery Place – Park Slope Historic District

CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS

A Romanesque Revival style rowhouse designed by C.P.H. Gilbert and built in 1887–88. Application is to construct a rear yard addition.

Architect: SoudryArchitect

The Historic Districts Council wishes to commend this proposal. The rear yard addition is modest in scale and thoughtfully designed, introducing minimal additional bulk while enhancing the building in a restrained and sensitive manner. This proposal serves as a strong example of how rear yard additions can be executed with care and restraint in historic districts.

Action: Approved.

CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
A Queen Anne/Neo-Grec style rowhouse designed by Daniel Burgess and built in 1889–90. Application is to modify masonry openings and replace doors and windows at the front façade.

Architect: TWA (Tom Winter Architect)

The Historic Districts Council finds this proposal generally appropriate, and the widenings reasonable, but suggests two refinements.

First, we feel that the enframement of the main entryway could be further articulated. Second, the proposed service door introduces a thicker framing condition that disrupts the existing harmony with the adjacent window it is paired with. We ask that the applicant adjust the framing of the new service door so that it continues to match that window.
