CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
A Medieval Revival style apartment building designed by Charles H. Lench and built in 1930-31. Application is to replace windows.
Architect: Rebecca Levin Architectural
HDC finds this proposal to be inappropriate. We are aware, and appreciate, that most of this building’s original windows have been replaced with 1-over-1s, but consistency is not a substitute for preservation. The purpose of designation is to look to the long-term, and the long-term goal is the restoration and stewardship of these structures.
Given the likelihood that all of the windows on this building are going to have to be replaced within the next 20-40 years, we believe this application can set a precedent for future window replacements in this building. HDC contends that an appropriate solution for this application, and those in the future, is an energy efficient window that preserves or recalls in some way the historic window muntin configuration.
Action: No Action, strongly encourage the building to think about a masterplan
