27 Hamilton Terrace – Hamilton Heights Historic District
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
An Italian Renaissance-style rowhouse designed by Robert Kelly and William Strom and built in 1897–98. Application is to combine masonry openings and install new infill.
Architect: REFORM Architecture
The Historic Districts Council is concerned that the combined second-floor opening is overly wide, weakening the masonry piers and disrupting the building’s proportions. The opening should be narrowed so that the piers on either side of the parlor level remain more substantial than the windows above. We also recommend revising the lintel to appear more robust and appropriately detailed.
HDC also recommends dark or black window framing to reduce visibility and better align with neighboring buildings.
Finally, though outside the scope of this application, we note that the historic upper windows were vertically divided and encourage their replacement with two-over-two configurations in a black finish at the earliest opportunity.
