LPC-25-08170 ADVISORY REPORT Architect: NYC Parks and Prospect Park Alliance HDC finds the proposed volume and variety of signage inappropriate for an Olmsted and Vaux landscape, and especially inappropriate for a secluded space like the Vale. Olmsted and Vaux landscapes are meant to offer respite from the urban environment. Instead, this volume and variety of signage brings urban cacophony into the Vale. The applicant’s presentation shows several different types of signage approved by LPC every 10 or 20 years. We note the lack of design consistency from one era to the next, as well as a tendency to pile multiple versions of signs into the same spaces. We would love to see the applicant and the Commission work to find a way to develop a more consistent, modest and long term signage solution for Prospect Park. Action: Positive report issued with comments regarding materiality, color, location, etc. |

LPC-25-09619 BINDING REPORT Architect: JAKLITSCH/GARDNER ARCHITECTS PC HDC is pleased to see this building being restored and made accessible. We support all interventions here except the fixed metal canopy and large glass doors proposed for the west-facing facade, which seem more appropriate for the meatpacking district than for this Victorian vernacular house. We appreciate that the stone porch, also proposed for the west-facing facade, will reuse stone from Nolan Park, and include a ramp to grade. We applaud this access intervention and note that so often access elements are not built with the care and attention to design and materiality that other parts of the building receive. We thank the applicants for thinking through this materiality, and wonder whether using brick for the porch, rather than stone, would be more stylistically appropriate, given the brick already present on the building. Action: No action. |

LPC-25-07909 CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS Architect: SSUPERETTE HDC finds the proposed volume of neon signage on this building to be inappropriate. Page 10 of the application shows signage in almost every window of the Lafayette Street facade, in addition to blade signage, halo-lit signage and threshold signage. Turning this handsome facade into a billboard is inappropriate. Action: Partial approval. Applicant will work with staff on a new proposal for the ticker lights and the fourth floor signage. |

LPC-25-08773 CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS Architect: Marvin & Davis, Bruce Price, Trowbridge & Livingston HDC appreciates that cast-stone manufactures are continually improving their product, and what is proposed here is a much better match for terra cotta than what was previously available. However, we remain concerned about how the cast stone will look as it ages. We suspect that over time its weathering will differentiate it from terra cotta, and therefore find terra cotta to be the most appropriate material for this project. Action: Unanimously approved. |

LPC-25-07995 ADVISORY REPORT Architect: Vinnie Bagwell | BCT Design Group, Artist(s) Parks / EDC / DCLA HDC is so happy to support the removal of the Sims statue plinth, and the introduction of this beautiful new Victory statue in Central Park. We note that because the previous plinth was set back into the park, and the proposed screen and statue are not, New York City is actually gaining back park space at the same time as we are getting a new work of art. Our Public Review committee thought that the Victory statue would shine even more brightly if the surrounding context was more deferential to the sculpture. For example, the wrought iron screen behind Victory, and the ground plane paving at her feet, could be simplified. We look forward to Victory taking her place at the Park! Action: Unanimously approved for positive report. |
