2022 SIX TO CELEBRATE Applications Are Now Being Accepted!

Now in its 11th year, the Historic Districts Council’s SIX TO CELEBRATE program provides the winning groups with hands-on help strategizing and implementing all aspects of their efforts to preserve their New York City neighborhoods. We teach community activists strategic tools, such as documentation, research, zoning, landmarking, publicity and public outreach to advance their local preservation campaigns.

Preserving East New York – Six to Celebrate, 2016

Since the program’s inception in 2011, HDC has helped 54 SIX TO CELEBRATE groups protect their local historic resources through such strategies as NYC landmark designation (33 Individual Landmarks and five Historic Districts have been designated); the National Register of Historic Places (one district became eligible and three districts and three individual properties have been listed); contextual zoning (one neighborhood was down-zoned to maintain scale and character); and neighborhood surveys (17 have been undertaken, resulting in the documentation of thousands of historic buildings across the five boroughs).

We have also assisted in leveraging over $115,000 in private and public grants for these community-driven projects and organized countless public programs to raise awareness and garner support. Neighborhoods selected also benefit from professionally designed websites, illustrated walking tour brochures, press attention, public program planning, growing audiences and new contacts in the field.
