ALERT: City Planning Commission to hold hearing on new Village districts, 6/7/06

On June 7th, the City Planning Commission will hold hearings on the recent expansion of the Greenwich Village Historic District and designation of the Weehawken Street Historic District. These historic designations, protecting several blocks of the Far West Village, went into effect with the unanimous vote of approval by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission on May 2nd. However, by law, these approvals must still be reviewed by the City Planning Commission and then the City Council, which could approve, scale back, or overturn these designations. But because of the very strong support for the landmark designations already expressed by City Planning Commission Chair Amanda Burden and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, we are confident that the landmark designations will receive strong support and approval, and will remain in effect without any rollbacks.

However, we do not want to take anything for granted. We also want to use this as an opportunity to remind the City that, in addition to these historic district designations, we were also promised landmark designation of eight individual sites in the Far West Village.

HOW TO HELP:
· WRITE TO THE CITY PLANNING COMMISSION urging them to support the recent historic district designations in the Far West Village, and also remind them that we still expect the City to deliver on its promise to landmark eight additional individual sites in the Far West Village. Go to www.gvshp.org/distlet.htm for a sample letter you can use and contact information. You can also use the same letter as sample testimony if you wish to attend the hearing on the 7th; bring several copies of your testimony and arrive at the City Planning Commission, 22 Reade Street, Spector Hall, by 10 am.
