ALERT: Cooper Union update on construction schedule of new academic building

Housing, Land Disposition, Zoning, & NYC Housing Authority Committee
Tuesday, May 16 – 6:30PM — Project Renewal, Kenton Hall – 333 Bowery (Between 2nd & 3rd Sts)
Cooper Union will be presenting their construction plans for their new academic building. This includes:
1. Demolition of the Hewitt Memorial located on 3rd Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets.
2. Construction of the new 135′ high academic building building- equivalent to a 14 story residential building.
This construction will affect the entire community. Traffic is already at a stand still, this will result in evan more trafic. Parking is already difficult, due to this project there will be an additional loss of parking on 6th, 7th, Street and Taras Shevchenko Place. All of this will begin sometime late spring early summer this year.
Cooper Union has been extremely disingenuous with our community, we need to hold their “feet to the fire”. Please come out to support our community and ensure that this project will cause as little chaos as possible.
Last Monday, May 8th, there was a sidewalk collapse on 3rd Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets – see picture attached. Three people fell 5 feet into the sidewalk. This happened just a block away from the new Cooper Union construction.
