Alert from GVSHP: City Approved Huge Building in South Village

GVSHP has just discovered that yesterday the City approved plans for an 8-story building at 178 Bleecker Street (MacDougal/Sullivan) in the South Village, where an 1862 houses was recently demolished.  GVSHP has been fighting this plan for months, arguing that zoning restrictions should limit the new development to no more than 60 feet (the approximate height of the demolished building and its neighbors).

GVSHP is fighting this approval (see letter at http://www.gvshp.org/_gvshp/preservation/south_village/doc/178BleeckerDOBlet10.09.doc.pdf), but we need your help.

PLEASE JOIN US AND OTHER NEIGHBORS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS FOR A DEMONSTRATION/PRESS CONFERENCE IN FRONT OF THE SITE THIS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22 AT NOON, TO CALL UPON THE CITY TO RESCIND THIS APPROVAL AND, TO TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT THE SOUTH VILLAGE.

We are outraged by this approval, and need to make our opposition heard loud and clear.  Please let me know if you can join us on Thursday, and if you can spread the word by forwarding this e-mail.

Please also don’t forget the Landmarks Preservation Commission is holding a hearing on the first third of GVSHP’s proposed South Village Historic District next Tuesday, October 27th at 2:30 pm.  Please come to testify in support and also push the city to consider the remaining two-thirds of the South Village as soon as possible, or just come to show support.  Whether you come or not, please send a letter now — go to http://www.gvshp.org/_gvshp/preservation/south_village/south_village-10-14-09.htm for details on the hearing and how to send a letter.
