ALERT: ..from the jaws of demolition — old PS 64

This afternoon, Appeals Court Judge David Saxe reversed yesterday’s decision by NY State Supreme Court Judge Soto. Judge Saxe granted our request to halt work stripping the architectural detail from old PS 64, the former Charas El Bohio.

Last week the owner of old PS 64 erected a sidewalk shed and was granted a scaffolding permit, and was earlier last month granted a demolition permit to strip the historic details from the building in what we believe is a malicious attempt to avoid designation as a NYC landmark at the Landmark Preservation Commission’s meeting to be held this coming Tuesday, May 16.

This stop work order is temporary, but we hope it will remain in place until our case is heard – & in the meantime, for yesterday, today, tomorrow and we hope beyond, old PS 64 remains safe To bring our efforts to success, we need your help…

PLEASE ATTEND next Tuesday’s Designation Hearing:
TUESDAY, May 16 – in the morning, time to be announced.
Landmark Preservation Commission
Municipal Building, 1 Center Street, 9th Floor

PACK THE ROOM ! Our time before the Commission is a historic culmination of the will of our community. We are grateful to the Commission for holding this designation hearing.

TESTIFY ! Anyone wishing to speak is granted 2 minutes. The Commission wants to hear of the architectural, historic, past social and cultural importance of old PS 64. Your testimony should focus on these issues. WHILE a Community Center is important to all of us, speaking of our community’s need for a Center falls outside the Commission’s concern.

If you are not sure what to say, you can read about the history of old PS 64

Speak about what moves you – if cornices and terra cotta are less passionate concerns to you than immigrant history and theater, then SPEAK about the Immigrant History and the Theater old PS 64 enabled.

AND AND AND, after everything else, ENCOURAGE the Commissioners to VOTE NOW! to Designate,VOTE NOW because the building’s owner seeks to destroy its details.
