ALERT: Preservation League of NYS Seeks Nominations for 2007 Historic Preservation Awards

Awards to honor individuals, organizations, and projects that exemplify excellence in historic preservation

The Preservation League of New York State is seeking nominations for its 2007 Excellence in Historic Preservation Awards, which recognize significant achievements in historic preservation throughout New York State. The postmark deadline for nominations is February 9, 2007. The awards will be presented during the Preservation League’s Annual Meeting in May in New York City.

The 2007 Awards Committee is seeking nominations of municipalities and organizations, grassroots preservationists and professional consultants, business owners, government officials and journalists who have shown an outstanding commitment to retaining, promoting and reusing New York State’s historic buildings, structures and cultural landscapes.

The Preservation League’s Annual Awards Program began in 1984 as a means of honoring excellence in the protection and revitalization of the Empire State’s historic and cultural resources. According to Jay DiLorenzo, president of the League, “By publicly recognizing exceptional historic preservation work and those who make it happen, our awards program encourages standards of excellence, builds community pride and stewardship, and inspires others to give more attention and effort to the protection of the irreplaceable resources we’ve inherited.”

The 2006 award recipients were: Harmony Mills #3 in Cohoes, Albany County; Rev. J. Edward Nash House, Buffalo, Erie County; 256-262 State Street, Carthage, Jefferson County; Weeksville Heritage Center, Brooklyn, and Brooklyn Academy of Music façade restoration, Kings County; Historic Front Street at South Street Seaport and 90 West Street, both in Lower Manhattan; Metro North Railroad Station, Yonkers, Westchester County. The Greene County Industrial Development Agency was honored for organizational excellence, and Henry McCartney, Former Executive Director of the Landmark Society of Western New York, Rochester, Monroe County was honored for individual excellence.
