ALERT: Report from the East Village Community Coalition on Rally

Yesterday’s May 1, 10 am RALLY & Press Conference on the steps of City Hall was a magnificent success… Nearly 100 people came during the regular business week, to join neighbors and our elected representatives.
Press coverage was light, given the May 1 Immigration rallies, but Mayor Bloomberg stopped and spoke with us a bit – having seen the “life size” model of old PS 64 and asking us why we were there. Importantly, ALL our elected officials attended are committed to landmark designation for PS 64.

Landmark Designation Hearing !! — May 16, Tuesday morning, Municipal Building, 9th Floor @ Landmark Preservation Commission [LPC], time to be announced. We will send out more information, BUT, we have worked years to achieve this moment. Please come and please testify as to the importance of Landmarking old PS 64, the former Charas El Bohio. Testimony should focus on the architectural, historical, social and cultural importance of the old PS 64, former Charas building. Our community does need a community center, and the former Charas El Bohio served as a critical resource to the community for over a quarter of a century – – BUT, BUT… The LPC’s job is LANDMARK consideration, so testimony must be limited to the architectural, historical, social and cultural importance of the old PS 64, former Charas building. Please come, with written testimony, in case time runs out and your testimony should be entered into the written record.
