Brownstone at 348 Clermont Avenue Being Demolished

The Fort Greene Association sadly reports that 348 Clermont Avenue will be demolished by Department Of Buildings [DOB] starting today.

There had been an enormous effort to get the owners to repair the building to no avail and the loss of 348 will be a great loss to the streetscape on Clermont Avenue.  The demolition of this building now leaves one solitary brownstone between the corner at Lafayette and the former parking lot for the Chancery of the Archdiocese of Brooklyn (the Chancery left Fort Greene last summer) placing 350 Clermont under extreme developmental pressure.

Developers will undoubtedly seek to assemble the now possible 7 lots into one; possibly for the construction of a large format non-contextual building.  The FGA will be diligent against this type of non-contextual development and will encourage responsible re-development of this site.

The FGA has also been informed that the Landmarks Preservation Commission will file suit against several of the individuals for demolition by neglect and fraud in the case of 348 Clermont Avenue.

In an effort to provide structural stability to 350 Clermont Avenue DOB will put in tie-backs to stabilize the building on the one side.
