Designed by Skillman and Farnsworth, and built 1881-1883, The Temple Court Building was a pioneer in “tall office building” construction, one of the city’s first “fire proof” structures, and an early experiment in the skyscraper form. Its nine levels of historic galleries showcase ornate ironwork and arched doors and windows. The building’s atrium, though once a common feature of buildings of this age, is now exceedingly rare. Due to updated fire safety rules the atrium was sealed off for years until the interior was restored. The remarkable restoration by Gerner, Kronick & Valcarcel, Architects, completed in 2016 not only highlights this rarity, but also restores the space to its spectacular beauty.
