As part of HDC’s continued programming focused on challenges and opportunities for historic affordable housing, we are excited to offer this in-person tour of The Hartby, a new adaptive reuse project in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
The Hartby, one the 11 projects we highlighted in our 2025 Housing Report, is the residential conversion of a 1870-1872 Catholic school campus designed by noted ecclesiastical architect Patrick Keely. The conversion yielded more than 200 units of housing, 30% of which are rent stabilized. The Hartby team reused two of the campus’s main buildings, demolished others, and designed new buildings complementary to the site’s historic structures, and the neighboring St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church.
This tour will be led by Matthew Linde, Principal and CEO of Property Resources Group, the developer of The Hartby and many other affordable developments on the East Coast. This exclusive visit will offer a look both inside and outside the building to explore how preservation practices and tools helped transform this historic, but undesignated college into housing.
