Dock Street Dumbo to be Brought Before City Planning Commission this Thursday!

Our friends at the Dumbo Neighborhood Association have been working extremely hard on this lately, and the following information is from their recent email blast:

———-

Borough President Marty Markowitz‘s long awaited non-binding recommendation for Dock St. was disclosed this week and much to our chagrin his position is considerably different than it was in 2004. At that time he rejected the Dock St. rezoning and stated that no building close to the Brooklyn Bridge should exceed the height of the bridge walkway. All of us are unsure what caused this change of heart, but it is clear that we will continue our work amidst the twists and turns of the political process.

There is some good news. The fact is that Marty rejected the proposal as presented by the developer. The downside is that in doing so, he recommended a significantly taller yet slightly more slender 25 story tower. His recommendation is unacceptable to those of us who still believe, as did Marty during the 2004 Dock St fight, that any building next to the Brooklyn Bridge should come no higher than the bridge walkway. His proposal is similar to the Two Trees plan in that it is out of context with adjacent properties, greatly obstructs views from the bridge walkway, and destroys the visual bowl formed by existing historical structures.

WE CONTINUE THE FIGHT!! WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT THE ZONING FOR DOCK ST AND THEREFORE THE FINAL MAXIMUM DIMENSIONS OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE DECIDED IN CITY COUNCIL. Our esteemed Councilman, David Yassky, remains against this project, as is Councilman Bill DeBlasio and Councilman, and Head of Land Use and Zoning Committee Chairman, Tony Avella. We continues to have the unflagging support of the Brooklyn Heights Association, Fulton Ferry Landing Association, Vinegar Hill Association, Cobble Hill Association, and Fort Green Association.

We urge all of you to come out and testify against the Dock St. project at the Department of City Planning public hearing on Wednesday, March 4th at 11 am. The hearing will be at 22 Reade St. in Manhattan and public testimony should go from around 11:30 to 2 pm. Please make sure your testimony does not exceed 3 minutes and arrive by 11 am so that you can sign up to speak. Please bring 20 copies of your testimony.
