EVENT: Ansonia Apartment-Hotel Is Focus of Free Lecture

The Ansonia Apartment-Hotel: The Origins of an Architectural Gem is the topic of a free illustrated lecture by art and architecture specialist Lori Zabar on Tuesday, May 9 at 6 p.m. at the Donnell Library Auditorium, 20 West 53rd Street, New York City. No reservations are required for this free lecture sponsored by the Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America.
The sumptuous Beaux-Art style Ansonia Apartment-Hotel (1899-1904) was the magnum opus of flamboyant Upper West Side real estate developer William Earl Dodge Stokes (1852-1926). Ms. Zabar will explore the design, construction and innovative amenities of this legendary building together with Stokes’s real estate career and the development of the Upper West Side.
With degrees from both Columbia University School of Architecture & Planning and New York University School of Law, Ms. Zabar has made contributions to both the study of decorative arts and to historic preservation advocacy. As a research assistant at The American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art she has participated in the preparation of exhibitions, catalogs and symposiums. Her preservation activities include advising on the restoration and furnishing of the Seventh Regiment Armory on Park Avenue and serving on the board of Landmark West!. She has written for many museum publications and lectured at schools and museums.
