EVENT: Come to Learn, Stay to Sing
Tomorrow night only at the Neighborhood Preservation Center/St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery, learn about landmarks and celebrate communities with the Historic Districts Council & the Church of Stop Shopping.
First, join us at the Neighborhood Preservation Center (232 East 11th Street) at 6pm for
Hardship: It’s Not Just an Inconvenience
HDC board members Franny Eberhart and Katharine McCormick will discuss the issues surrounding the hardship provision included in the New York City Landmarks Law. This provision, which allows owners to plead that landmarking prevents them from earning a certain minimum return on their property has been cited frequently by developers in the current real estate climate. However, it has rarely used successfully to demolish or alter landmarked structures.
Then amble across the courtyard to St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery at 8pm for
Reverend Billy’s Fabulous Worship
With the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir
Featuring a new song from the choir —
ARE YOU MY LOVER OR ARE YOU MY LOGO?
The Rev and singers return from the Northern California, from Switzerland and from Columbus, Ohio, which is like the Lake of Hellfire, only less interesting. In Columbus the church confronted Victoria Secret shareholders at their meeting. The paper for their MILLION (stupid semi-porn) CATALOGUES A DAY comes from clear-cut virgin boreal forests.
Back home for the summer: Join Wal Mart Free New York – the retail Devil seems to have its eyes on the Bronx, even setting up a very well funded fake Chamber of Commerce.
(There’s a connection; the Rev is an HDC Grassroots Preservation Award winner and the kind of person you want at your side when the bulldozers are at the gate and the developers are at the door. )
The lecture is free but you need to RSVP;
The Service is $5 but you can just walk in.
Hope to see you tomorrow!
