NEW YORK VOICES: New York: Past and Future – tonight @ 11PM

Join host Rafael Pi Roman for a look at New York’s future and past.

The mayor’s plan for New York City 2030 comes under the scrutiny of Joyce Purnick, former New York Times Metro Columnist, and Adam Gopnick of The New Yorker. How ready are we if estimates for an additional one million residents come true? And is there a danger that the soul of New York will drain away in a wash of new money, retail outlets and big developments?

Stuck in Traffic: A new coalition of business leaders and environmentalists want the city to charge motorists to drive below 60th street during workdays. It’s working in London and it’s called Congestion Pricing. Will New Yorkers embrace it or see it as just another way to keep Manhattan a playground for the elite?

We close with a look at New York’s past. In the late 1930s, a young photographer named Rebecca Lepkoff went out in to the streets and took pictures of the people she saw. Today she is 90 years old, and her new book, Life on the Lower East Side, provides an unusually clear window into what the neighborhood was like when she was young.
