EVENT: St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery opens its doors this weekend

The St. Mark’s Historic Landmark Fund will offer architectural tours of the historic St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery site and present a series of films about New York City’s neighborhoods and history during
openhousenewyork on Saturday and Sunday, October 7th and 8th between 11am and 5pm.

On Sunday at 2pm & 3:30pm the entire campus (the buildings and grounds) of the St. Mark’s site will be open to the public for guided tours, reservation required. Otherwise, self-guided architectural tours of portions of the campus will be available. The film series will be highlight the collection of the Neighborhood Preservation Center library, which is housed in the historic Ernest Flagg Rectory of St. Mark’s. Films and times are below and can also be found on our website.

Guided tours, led by Michael Relyea and members of the Landmark Fund staff, will permit access to the Sanctuary, Parish Hall and West Yard. There will be two 30-minute tours. Meet at Abe Lebewohl park in front of the Church.

A documentary that explores the history and culture of New York City streets from pre-automobile times to the present. This examination allows for an understanding of how the city has slowly relinquished
the conception of the street as public space to a mindset that prioritizes the rapid movement of cars and trucks.

Saturday & Sunday, ongoing

A collection of short films and footage from New York?s past will be
screened through-out the day. Explore Coney Island, the great amusement park, during the 1940s, the Beat counterculture of Greenwich Village in the early 1960s, and the Third Avenue Elevated Railway before it was demolished.
