Jane Jacobs: Urban Visionary

Alice Sparberg Alexiou brings long-overdue attention to Jacobs’s far-reaching influence as an original and prescient thinker in her recent biography, Jane Jacobs: Urban Visionary (Rutgers University Press, 2006). The author will give a brief presentation introducing the book and ideas on urban economies as outlined in Jacobs’ second book, The Economy of Cities.
Author/journalist Roberta Brandes Gratz will engage an expert panel in a discussion concerning recent economic development in New York City. Panelists will include,
* Elliot Sclar, Director of the Columbia University Urban Planning Program
* Ron Shiffman, Professor of Urban Planning at the Pratt Institute, School of Architecture
* Adam Friedman, Executive Director of the New York Industrial Retention Unit
