Events from the Manhattan Borough Historian

Friends & Colleagues:

I have a few announcements I’d like to share with you.

1. This Saturday, April 7, from 6:00p to 8:00p, the Queens Museum of Art will present “The Panorama Challenge,” a fun fundraiser for one of my favorite new institutions, the City Reliquary. This interactive geographical trivia-based contest will take place around the Panorama, that jaw-dropping three-dimensional scale model of the five boroughs built for the 1964 World’s Fair. Attendees can compete or just observe the fun. The guys of Levys’ Unique New York tour company will emcee the festivities; I will serve as one of the “celebrity” judges. Admission is $25 (includes two free drinks). See http://www.cityreliquary.org/ for full details.

2. Save the date! Please join me on Tuesday, June 19, at the Mid-Manhattan Library where I will present a free illustrated lecture on the 1898 consolidation of the five boroughs.

3. The various Robert Moses events and exhibits are breaking attendance records all around town. The folks at the Museum of the City of New York have informed me that they’ve just added yet another Moses-related panel discussion to their schedule: “We Got Park: The Biggest Park Expansion Since Moses” (Wednesday, May 2, from 6:30p to 8:00p). NYC Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion, and others will discuss Moses’ legacy and efforts to reinvent the park system for the 21st century. See http://mcny.org/ for more information.

4. On Saturday, my office presented the first of what I hope will be a series of practical, history-related public workshops. Three dozen attendees listened eagerly as preservation expert Brenda Parnes led a seminar titled “Caring for Your Cherished Old Papers & Photos.” Stay tuned for future workshops.
