The Art and Craft of Stone Inscriptions
Saturday, June 24; 10 am – 5:30 pm$210 (189 Members); 6 AIA/CES LUs
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from the artisan Nicholas Benson of The John Stevens Shop in Newport, Rhode Island, whose work includes the exquisite stone inscriptions that grace many of America’s leading landmarks-The National Gallery of Art, The Frick Collection, The Georgia O’Keefe Museum, and the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC . Mr. Benson apprenticed with his father, John E. Benson, recipient of the Arthur Ross Award, to learn the delicate skill of broad edged brush lettering and carving with mallet and chisel in the tradition of the great Roman inscriptions. Join us for a day long workshop on lettering and inscriptions. The day begins with a presentation and discussion of Benson’s projects, including an in-depth discussion of techniques, tools, materials, and concepts to keep in mind when designing. In the afternoon students will be given an opportunity to design their own inscription, followed by an interactive demonstration of carving technique. This course is suitable for architects, interior designers, sculptors, or those who have an interest in lettering and inscription design. Basic manual facility is recommended.
