Join us for fascinating talks on servants, socialites, and sailors in the 19th century. Authors Carol Wallace and Richard Zacks join BPMM docent Doug Hearle three Thursday evenings in March to present these varied glimpses of American history. Held in the glorious Greek Revival parlors of the mansion with a wine and cheese reception afterwards to meet, greet, and query the speakers.

To Marry an English Lord Or How Anglomania Really Got Started

 Thursday, March 11, 7 p.m.

Author Carol Wallace dishes up real-life tales of wealth and marriage, sex and snobbery and the 19th century American heiresses who went husband hunting in Britain, swapping trusts for tiaras in the throes of anglomania.

Wallace is the author of 21 books. Her next novel, Leaving van Gogh, will be published in 2011 by Spiegel & Grau.

The Pirate Coast: Thomas Jefferson, the First Marines, and the Secret Mission of 1805

 Thursday, March 18, 7 p.m.

 Author, journalist, and pirate scholar Richard Zacks relates the story of Captain William Eaton who battled Barbary Coast pirates at the behest of President Thomas Jefferson. A thrilling saga involving a covert mission, exotic lands, political intrigue, and more in the first decade of the 19th century.

 Zacks’ next book, on Teddy Roosevelt’s years as New York City Police Commissioner, comes out in 2011 from Doubleday.

Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum is located at 895 Shore Road, Pelham Bay Park, Bronx, New York. The Mansion and Carriage House are open to the public for guided tours on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Tours start at quarter after the hour from noon until 3 p.m. The gardens and grounds are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to dusk. Museum admission is $5 adults, $3 seniors and students, free for children under six. Visiting the garden and grounds is free.
