Lecture on the General Slocum Tragedy: Tuesday, June 8

Next week the good folks at the City Reliquary will launch a new free monthly history lecture series at the landmark Williamsburgh (Brooklyn) Branch Library with a presentation titled “The General Slocum Steamboat Tragedy of 1904.” They have asked Manhattan Borough Historian Michael Miscione to introduce the first speaker, Prof. Edward T. O’Donnell. Prof. O’Donnell wrote the highly acclaimed book, Ship Ablaze: The Tragedy of the Steamboat General Slocum.

In June of 1904 the fully loaded excursion boat General Slocum caught fire in the East River. Over 1,000 persons – mostly women and children – burned to death or drowned. The little-remembered Slocum fire was the most lethal disaster in New York City history until the September 11, 2001 attacks.
