Featuring : Historian-led walking tour of Lower East Side ends with annotated viewing and discussion of vintage Yiddish film, The Living Orphan-filmed on East Broadway

The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy is sponsoring a public walking tour, The ”Edifice Complex” on the Lower East Side. Historian/writer Shulamith Z.Berger, Curator for Special Collections at the Gottesman Library of Yeshiva University and popular Conservancy guide & artist Jai Zion, will examine why successful immigrants chose to build magnificent edifices next to dilapidated tenements. Participants will discuss the dominant forms of architecture on the LES, and hear the authentic stories behind the planning and construction of several land marked/historic buildings —
o The 10 story Daily Yiddish Forward; built 1910- architect: George A. Boehm
o Jarmulowsky Bank 1910 – Rouse & Goldstone
o Bialystoker Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation; 1929 – Henry Hurwit
o Seward Park Library; 1909 – Babb, Cook & Welch
o Educational Alliance; 1889 – Brunner & Tryon
o Henry Street Settlement; 1829 restoration architect J. Lawrence Jones & associates
o Mayflower Building 221 East Broadway, 1907. Architects Bernstein & Bernstein.

Tour will conclude with scenes from the Yiddish classic film, The Living Orphan, at the Bialystoker Center for Rehabilitation
