LPC to hear Upper West Side Landmarks on July 14
Thanks to you and many other concerned New Yorkers, last February the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) finally calendared West-Park Presbyterian Church for possible designation as an official NYC Landmark. Now, more than 20 years after not including this building in the Upper West Side/Central Park Historic District (first heard in 1988, designated in 1990), the LPC has named the day for West-Park’s long-awaited public hearing: Tuesday, July 14, 2009 (time tba)!
Mark your calendars for a “double header ” because on the same day, the LPC will hold a public hearing to consider designating the original Interborough Rapid (IRT) Transit Powerhouse, also a landmark decades in the making. The Powerhouse was first heard back in 1979 and again in 1991 – with your support, the third time should be the charm!
Rarely is there the opportunity to speak up simultaneously for two such worthy – and overdue – landmarks in waiting. Please make every effort to join us on July 14 to celebrate these buildings as they get their much-anticipated day in the sun. You are the key to ensuring West-Park and the Powerhouse get the happy ending they deserve! Please read on for tips on contacting Mayor Bloomberg, the LPC and other important decision-makers. They need to hear from you!
