MOMA Opponents Mobilize

From the West 54-55th Street Block Association

Neighbors:  The team was brilliant today at the City Council’s Zoning Committee meeting. We know that the decision will be political and we still don’t know it will be, but no organizations could have given a better performance than your neighbors did this morning.

Take a look at this from CBS News.

We, along with other members of the West 54 and West 55th Block Association spoke and submitted our statements in opposition to the proposed 1,250 foot high – 83 story skyscraper the developers (The Museum of Modern Art – MOMA and Hines Interests) want to build mid-block between West 53rd and West 54th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues).

If approved, this building will be higher than the Empire State building and is totally inappropriate for the MID-BLOCK site in which it will be built. In the past, buildings of this height and size were only permitted to be erected on ‘Commercial Avenue’ blocks not side streets. Allowing this development would set a very bad precedent for the entire city.

Yesterday’s hearing was the last in a long process.

Now the City Council of New York will vote (possibly by this Thursday, October 8, whether to grant several special permits overriding existing zoning laws to allow this building to go forward.

I am asking that you make one phone call or send a FAX or email to

Contact Christine Quinn, the head of the New York City Council.

The building site is located in her district and I believe she will have the most influence in the decision and can possibly sway the City Council vote against the developers. It is important to make this call ASAP – Please call today .

All you need to say is:

” I oppose the MOMA -HINES Building as currently proposed by the Developers. Please vote to deny the special permits for zoning lot mergers and air rights transfers. Don’t allow this building in its proposed current height to be erected. An approved building should not be more than 25 – 40 stories high”.
