Voters chose three new City Council members Tuesday night in a special election, two from vacant districts in Queens and one from Staten Island.

Julissa Ferreras won in the 21st Council District and Eric Ulrich won in the 32nd Council District in Queens. Ken Mitchell won in the 49th Council District in Staten Island. The winners of the nonpartisan special election will serve through the end of the year. They will have to run again in their parties’ primaries on Sept. 8 and in the general election on Nov. 3.

The Staten Island seat became open when Michael McMahon won the congressional seat previously held by Rep. Vito Fossella.

Ferreras and Ulrich will succeed Hiram Monserrate and Joseph Addabbo, who were elected to the state Senate.

Both Julissa Ferreras and Ken Mitchell participated in HDC’s League of Preservation Voters initiative – see their positions on development and preservation concerns in their districts here and here.

UPDATE: Debi Rose is contesting the results in District 49, so the Staten Island seat is still in play. Debi also answered the questionnaire.
