PEARL STREET, NEW YORK PRESERVATION UPDATE
Demolition Delay – Demolition work appears to be at a standstill on Pearl St. between Maiden Ln. and Platt St., due to one hold-out tenant – a small nail salon at the storefront of 209 Pearl St. Initial demolition work has begun at 215 Pearl St.Research – A research paper “A Great Attachement to Curious and Uncommon Books: Unearthing the Esoteric Interests of Ithiel Town.” will be presented at UC Davis, June 8-11. The conference is organized by the Association for the Study of Esotericism (ASE), based at Michigan State U. A sketch by the architect A.J. Davis of a design for the NYU Chapel (1837) has surfaced within the archives of the architect A.J. Davis (Avery Library, Columbia U.) and may have relevance to the Pearl Street brickwork symbol. History Board – A proposal for a history board nr the junction of Pearl St./Maiden Ln. is in the early stages. Rockrose Development has agreed to fund a portion of the installation, with additional support solicited from private individuals, corporations and grants.
Think Coffee – Antique beams from 211 Pearl St. have been recycled as shelving at Think Coffee, a new Mercer St., NY café that features Fair Trade Coffee and Teas. Fiesta (June 28th) – Pancho Magico, a Mexican restaurant on the second floor of 213 Pearl Street (1831) is celebrating an anniversary as the oldest Mexican restaurant in New York City with a party on Wednesday, June 28th. The owners, NYC preservationists with an interest in Pearl St. history are invited. The event will feature authentic Mexican cuisine (free) and a live five-piece Mariachi Band.
