Acknowledging they are currently powerless to stop the destruction of a East Village landmark, community members Monday rallied yesterday outside the 1906 school building, vowing they’ll find a way to save it.

The site’s developer, Gregg Singer, obtained an alteration permit before the building was ruled a landmark on June 20, and can legally do what he wishes to the former Charas/El Bohio Community Center at 10th Street between Avenue B and C.

“There is no legal recourse to stop the [permit] at this moment,” city councilwoman Rosie Mendez (D-Manhattan) said at the rally that drew more than 50 people.
