Preservation & Economic Development on Staten Island: Don't Miss the Boat

PRESERVATION and ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Staten Island, Don’t Miss the Boat!

Jay DiLorenzo, President of the Preservation League of New York State, will speak at 7:30PM on Friday, September 7, 2007, at Christ Church, 76 Franklin Avenue, Staten Island. This discussion will present how other parts of New York State have effectively used preservation as a tool for revitalization.

According to Mr. DiLorenzo, Island residents and their elected leaders need to identify, preserve, and use our borough’s historic and cultural resources to protect what remains of Staten Island. “Staten Island has great potential for economic and cultural development through historic preservation,”says Jay DiLorenzo,

“It’s good to have someone from the outside looking at Staten Island,” says James Ferreri, President of the Preservation League of Staten Island (PLSI). “He has dealt with cities upstate that have programs where historic preservation has made an enormous difference in the economy and quality of life. This free presentation is for all who are concerned about teardowns and community development.” The public policy benefits of historic preservation are clear and well documented at both the state and national level. Preservation is a key catalyst for job creation, stimulates tax-base growth, and protects municipal investments and open space.

This presentation is the first to commemorate the Preservation League of Staten Island’s 30th Anniversary. “We will also be honoring historian Barnett Shepherd and Mitchell Grubler, two of the original founders of PLSI” said Ferreri. Mr. Shepherd is currently finishing a historic resource survey for Tottenville. Mitchell Grubler was the Executive Director of the Alice Austen House Museum and was formerly the director of the Queens Historical Society.

Don’t miss the boat! The public is invited to this free and timely lecture.
