Return of the Monday Morning Coffee Talks! Demolition-by-Neglect

With John Weiss, Deputy Counsel, NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission

Monday, September 14 – Note! Event delayed due to Labor Day holiday!

8:30am, Neighborhood Preservation Center, 232 East 11th Street, Manhattan

Though New York’s Landmarks Law ensures the preservation and protection of our city’s historic resources, at any given time a small number of designated landmarks suffer from significant disrepair. If the dilapidation is severe, the Landmarks Preservation Commission has the authority to take responsible parties to court for a legal offense known as Demolition-by-Neglect.

Join LPC Deputy Counsel John Weiss as he kicks off this season’s Coffee Talk series with a presentation on Demolition-by-Neglect. Mr. Weiss will discuss the potential legal outcomes of such cases, as well as the formal legal process through which these cases are pursued. Mr. Weiss will also provide an overview of a few high profile Demolition-by-Neglect cases currently underway. For some background on these cases, see Mr. Weiss’s article in the latest issue of District Lines(pdf).

This event is FREE to the public. Reservations are required, as space is limited. For more information, please contact Lauren Belfer, HDC’s community coordinator, at (212) 614-9107 or [email protected].

HDC’s Neighborhood Partners Program is sponsored in part by Deutsche Bank, The New York Community Trust, Lily Auchincloss Foundation, Assembly Members Deborah J. Glick & Richard N. Gottfried, and State Senators Thomas K. Duane, Liz Krueger, Andrew J. Lanza & Diane J. Savino.
