Architecture and Neighborhoods in New York City, 1908-1929
with Andrew Dolkart

The Columbia University architectural historian shares his latest research. In the first decades of the 20th century, a group of architects, homeowners, and developers converted deteriorating row houses in old Manhattan neighborhoods into modern and stylish dwellings. Some called it a pioneering display of innovative and affordable housing alternatives. Today we might call it gentrification. Dolkart mines the subtleties and complexities of this movement, looking at how these builders changed the character of the area.

Andrew S. Dolkart teaches at the Columbia University School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and has written and lectured extensively about New York’s architecture and development.
