Updates From DUMBO

Historian David McCullough on board: On Wednesday, April 1, 2009, renowned historian, lecturer and two-time Pulitzer prize-winning author David McCullough held a press conference in DUMBO to express his vehement opposition to the Dock Street proposal. He followed up with an Op-Ed video for the New York Times, featuring his take on the bridge, its history and future. Thanks to Mr. McCullough’s talent and sincerity, and to DNA’s savvy public relations work, this story was also covered by the AP, USA Today, NY Times, NY Post, NY Daily News, Brooklyn Daily Eagle, The Brooklyn Paper, NY1, WABC-TV, and WCBS-TV.

CB2 rejects the Department of City Planning’s proposed 10-block DUMBO rezoning: On April 7 the full Community Board followed the advice of its own Land Use Subcommittee, rejecting the up-zoning plan proffered by the Department of City Planning (DCP). DNA has been speaking with many local government officials to make the case against the DCP plan, which, if passed, will sacrifice local commercial businesses while vastly increasing residential density and building heights within a 10-block area east of Adams St and the Manhattan Bridge. Meanwhile the DCP plan would leave the rest of DUMBO open to continued developer requests for spot rezoning, rather than addressing responsible future growth in the neighborhood as a whole. DNA will continue to work with planning experts and government officials to insure that future development works for the entire DUMBO community.

The NY Post published an article on April 1, outlining disturbing communications between Two Trees Management and the School Construction Authority (SCA). These revelations were subsequent to a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request that brought to light documents showing how the community was misled by the Department of Education (DoE) and the SCA regarding their efforts to find an existing building to house a new public middle school in Brooklyn’s District 13.

Join us to celebrate recent successes and set the stage for future progress. DNA needs your help to keep up its important work for the DUMBO community.
