Walk Kreischerville!

The Staten Island Museum invites you to attend:

 The History of Staten Island: Walking Tour of Kreischerville (Charleston). Saturday, April 10th, 11:00 a.m. Meet at the corner of Sharrotts Road and Arthur Kill Road across from Killmeyer’s Old Bavaria Inn. Cost: $15 non-members/$10 Staten Island Museum members.  

 Go back in time for for an in-depth look at historic Kreischerville when the Androvette, Kreischer and Killmeyer families were active and influential; when clay pits were dug for their valuable clay deposits and fashioned into bricks at the Kreischer Brickworks on the Arthur Kill River; when employee housing first housed German immigrant and then Hungarian immigrants; when the former Charles Kreischer mansion was home to one of the most important men of the era; when St. Peter’s German Evangelical Reformed Church was the spiritual center of the community; when the old Public School 4 hummed with the three R’s of education; when clay digging men sallied up to the fabulous mahogany bar of Killmeyers’ hotel to enjoy a frothy draft… All of this as well as facts relative to ethnicity, industry, the environmental movement, religion, and architecture will be discussed as they relate to the history of this unique Staten Island community.
