West-Park Presbyterian Church Needs Your Help!

Next Wednesday, April 7, at 11AM, the City Council Sub-Committee on Landmarks, Public Siting and Maritime Uses will review West-Park Presbyterian Church for landmark designation.

West-Park Presbyterian Church has actually been granted Individual Landmark status but still needs to be affirmed by the City Council. The City Council public hearing is set for next Wednesday 4/7.  Although there is broad community support for the designation – including Council member Gale Brewer, Community Board Seven, numerous preservation groups including HDC, Friends of West-Park, Landmark West! and The New York Landmarks Conservancy – the owners of the building, the New York Presbytery, are still strongly opposed to the designation.

Despite years of community efforts to find alternative plans to preserve the building and help the congregation – efforts which resulted in at least two viable development proposals – the Presbytery of New York City continues to condemn the designation regardless of all alternatives. Now is the time for all New Yorkers who are concerned about historic religious buildings in their own neighborhoods to speak out and support the LPC’s designation of this significant historic building.

An email from YOU is absolutely essential to let the City Council members know just how important it is to preserve West-Park.  They need to hear from you NOW to protect this valuable landmark.

Sending an email to your Council Member takes just moments with the help of Landmark West’s call to action email.  Your email is so important, please send it today!
