Demostration this Sunday against the Trump SoHo Condo-Hotel
DEMONSTRATION THIS SUNDAY, MARCH 4, at 1 pm AGAINST THE 45-STORY TRUMP SOHO ‘CONDO-HOTEL’ at Spring and Varick Streets
* Tell the City to Stop Helping Trump and Start Protecting Our Neighborhoods and Enforcing Our Zoning Rules
COME TO THE DEMONSTRATION: Please join us this Sunday, March 4 at 1 pm at Spring and Varick Streets for a demonstration calling upon the City NOT to allow the Trump SoHo Condo Hotel to move forward, and to enforce the zoning regulations which are supposed to restrict such developments at this site and in neighborhoods throughout the city. The demonstration is sponsored by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, the SoHo Alliance, Friends of Hudson Square, the Tribeca Community Association, Housing Conservation Coordinators, Pratt Center for Community Development, Brooklyn Economic Development Corp., the Sullivan/Thompson Coalition, Charlton Street Block Association, Van Dam Street Block Association, Carmine Street Block Association, South Village Landmarking Alliance, and many others (download flyer at www.gvshp.org/documents/Trumpdemoflyer.pdf ).
In spite of their repeated broken promises about the project, the City continues to work with Trump and his partners to ‘make’ the development legal. But GVSHP and its allies contend that such a development is inherently illegal, because it violates prohibitions against building residences and residential hotels in areas such as this. Instead, we contend the City should not grant the developer the permits necessary to move ahead, and instead require them to apply for a zoning change if they wish to build. Through such a public review process the development can be blocked, approved, or changed to meet community or other concerns. For further information, see www.gvshp.org/trump.htm.
