Dry Dock #1

Designated September 23, 1975

The first permanent dry dock in the area was primarily engineered by William J. McAlpine. He solved several massive problems posed by the excavation site, which included a faulty cofferdam and flooding underground springs. The successful masonry superstructure, still active today, consists primarily of 23,000 yards of granite facing. Designed the withstand the uplifing forces, the stone at the bottom of the dry dock forms a great inverted arch below a flat, thirty-foot wide floor.

Brooklyn Navy Yard

The Brooklyn Navy Yard was established in 1801. From the early 1810s through the 1960s, it was an active shipyard for the United States Navy. There are four Individual Landmarks in the Navy Yard.
