    Jun 1, 2024

    Saturday, June 1, 2024
    11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The Morrisania neighborhood was the home to many jazz musicians and was also one of the
cradles of hip hop in The Bronx. This walking tour will explore the jazz, doo-wop, Latin music, and hip hop history of the neighborhood; as well as some of the social history that has changed the face of the neighborhood, from the fires that raged here in the 1970s and 1980s that led to visits by Presidents Reagan and Carter to the social activism that has built it back up.

    6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
    Via Zoom

In this Preservation School class led by Let There Be Neon’s (LTBN) Jeff Friedman, participants will get a first-hand account of working with neon lighting. He will talk about how LTBN got started and what led him to the profession of artistic lighting. Jeff will provide a history of neon lighting, how it became popular, and how it’s made. In addition, he will explain the differences between new neon and historic neon and LED vs. neon.

Jeff will give examples of historic and new commissions LTBN has created through the years including their Studio 54 installation, early portable neon, and partnerships with artists, Soul Cycle and Sweetgreen. He will also explain the restoration process of historic neon including neon signs in Cuba, the neon sign for the famed UWS bar Dublin House, and much more.
